McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act

Originally established in 1987, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act establishes federal legislation related to the education of children and youth experiencing homelessness. The act was reauthorized in December 2015 by Title IX, Part A, of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law designed to support students experiencing homelessness. This law ensures that these students have access to a stable education, even if they are moving frequently due to housing instability. It allows them to stay enrolled in their school of origin, provides transportation assistance, and ensures they receive the same educational opportunities as their peers. The goal is to reduce barriers to education for homeless children and youth, helping them succeed in school despite their challenging circumstances. If you need more information or support regarding this program, please don't hesitate to reach out to our district’s designated liaison: Bailey Campbell (BCampbell@sd308.org).
