Seal of Biliteracy
SEAL OF BILITERACY GENERAL INFORMATION
The Seal of Biliteracy is an award that a student can earn upon High School graduation by showing proficiency in both English and another language. This award is included in their official transcripts and can be worth College credit towards studying a world language. If a student does not qualify for the full SEAL of Biliteracy, they can still qualify for the Commendation.There are several tests they can take that will qualify them for the Seal of Biliteracy or the Commendation of Biliteracy. SEAL OF BILITERACY REQUIREMENTS
The Seal of Biliteracy is an award designated on the student’s diploma and transcript given by the State of Illinois in recognition of attaining proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Biliteracy is defined as having high levels of proficiency in the four domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English and another language. The Commendation toward Biliteracy is awarded to students who demonstrate progress toward biliteracy, but do not fully meet the requirements of the Seal of Biliteracy.
The benefits of earning the Seal of Biliteracy include:
- Providing the cognitive and academic benefits of multilingualism
- Increasing employment opportunities in local and global job markets
- Strengthening intergroup relationships and honoring the cultures and languages of a community
In addition:
- By law, each public university in this State shall accept the State Seal of Biliteracy as equivalent to 2 years of foreign language coursework taken during high school; and
- The community college or university shall award foreign language course credit to a student who has received a State Seal of Biliteracy if requested within three academic years after graduating from high school. (105 ILCS 5/2-3.159)
Testing for the Seal of Biliteracy
All students must demonstrate proficiency in both English and another language through state-approved, standardized assessments and courses listed in the charts below. Testing for the Seal of Biliteracy is limited to Juniors and Seniors, or students enrolled in an Honors or AP language class. Other students may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The award is not given until graduation although the requirements may have been satisfied earlier. If a student leaves the district before graduation, the student will not receive a Seal from Oswego CUSD 308, but the student can request that any qualifying scores be shared with their current district.
Cost
The cost to complete the testing process toward the Seal of Biliteracy will be the actual cost of the Advanced Placement (AP) exam, the ACTFL Assessment - AAPPL test (Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages) or the STAMP™ test (Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency).

El Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe es un premio otorgado por el estado de Illinois que un estudiante puede obtener al graduarse de la escuela secundaria al demostrar competencia tanto en inglés como en otro idioma. SELLO DE LECTOESCRITURA BILINGÜE
El Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe es un premio que se indica en el diploma y el expediente del estudiante, y que es otorgado por el estado de Illinois en reconocimiento por lograr el dominio de dos o más idiomas antes de graduarse de la escuela preparatoria. La lectoescritura bilingüe se define como tener un alto nivel de dominio de las cuatro destrezas lingüísticas -expresión oral, expresión escrita, comprensión auditiva y comprensión lectora- en inglés y en otro idioma. El Reconocimiento de Lectoescritura Bilingüe se otorga a los estudiantes que demuestran progreso en la lectoescritura bilingüe, pero que no cumplen completamente los requisitos del Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe.
Los beneficios de obtener el Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe incluyen:
- Proporcionar los beneficios cognitivos y académicos del multilingüismo
- Aumentar las oportunidades de empleo en los mercados locales y globales de trabajo
- Fortalecer las relaciones entre grupos y honrar las culturas y los idiomas de una comunidad
Además:
- Por ley, cada universidad pública de este estado aceptará el Sello Estatal de Lectoescritura Bilingüe como equivalente a 2 años de cursos de idiomas extranjeros tomados durante la escuela preparatoria; y
- La escuela universitaria o la universidad otorgará créditos de cursos de idiomas extranjeros a un estudiante que haya recibido un Sello Estatal de Lectoescritura Bilingüe si se solicita en un plazo de tres años académicos después de graduarse de la escuela preparatoria. (105 ILCS 5/2-3.159)
Examen para el Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe
Todos los estudiantes deben demostrar dominio de inglés y de otro idioma mediante las evaluaciones estandarizadas y aprobadas por el estado y los cursos que aparecen en las tablas a continuación. Los exámenes para el Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe se limitan a los estudiantes de tercer y cuarto año, o a los estudiantes inscritos en una clase de idiomas de nivel superior (Honors) o de nivel avanzado (AP, por sus siglas en inglés). Otros estudiantes pueden ser considerados en función de cada caso. El premio no se otorga hasta la graduación, aunque los requisitos se hayan cumplido antes. Si un estudiante se va del distrito antes de graduarse, no recibirá un Sello del Distrito Escolar 308 de la Unidad Comunitaria de Oswego (CUSD 308, por sus siglas en inglés), pero el estudiante puede solicitar que se comparta con su distrito actual cualquier puntuación que cumpla los requisitos.
Costo
El costo para completar el proceso de evaluación para el Sello de Lectoescritura Bilingüe será el precio del examen de AP, del examen de evaluación del desempeño en el dominio de idiomas del Consejo Americano para la Enseñanza de Lenguas Extranjeras (AAPPL, por sus siglas en inglés) o del examen de medición de la competencia basada en estándares (STAMP, por sus siglas en inglés).
