At the time of registration, families must complete a Home Language Survey (HLS). On this survey, there are two questions related to language use in the home. If a family answers YES to either question, the student’s English language proficiency is tested.

This screening process of English language proficiency is required by law for all school districts in Illinois. It is your child’s right to be screened and receive support if he or she qualifies for English Learner services.

 

The state of Illinois sets the cutoff scores for English language proficiency. When students do not meet proficiency as designated by the state, they have the right to receive English language support. Qualifying students are placed into an English Learner program.

 

Qualifying English Learners must be assessed annually with the state required assessment. This assessment measures students’ level of English proficiency and growth in English acquisition and academic vocabulary. English Learners must take this test every year until they no longer qualify, according to the state of Illinois. Once a student is identified as an English Learner, the only way of exiting the program is to meet English language proficiency criteria on this annual assessment, as set by the state of Illinois.

English Learner preschool students are served by an ESL (English as a Second Language) or Bilingual-Spanish endorsed teacher. Bilingual - Spanish instruction in a self-contained, co-taught or push-in classroom model is available.

English Learner students are served by an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsed teacher through a variety of methods: the teacher pushes-in or pulls-out from the Gen-Ed or Special Ed classroom to deliver targeted English instruction. There may be home language support if available and appropriate. 

 

English Learners of various language backgrounds who have opted to remain in a general education classroom instead of a self-contained Dual Language or Sheltered English Instruction classroom.

Bilingual instructional model where the goal is for students to develop bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism. Content area instruction (math, science, social studies, and language arts) occurs in Spanish and English in varying amounts throughout the years. The language of instruction begins in Kindergarten with approximately 80% Spanish and progresses through the years to 50% Spanish in 5th grade. 

 

English Learner students whose home language is Spanish comprise at least 50% of the classroom. The other seats are filled by Non-English Learner students in self-contained classrooms.
