On Wednesday, May 11, 2016 Homestead Elementary School students and staff had the privilege of meeting established author, Nick Bruel. He is the author of the popular Bad Kitty Series. Second grade teacher, Julie Johnsen reached out to Mr. Bruel to let him know how thankful they were for his books. Second grade students had just wrapped up their Book Madness competition and for the 2nd year in a row, Bad Kitty was the winner. Nick was planning to come to the Chicagoland area for a book expo and when he got word of this, he immediately offered to come meet the students. He presented to grades 1-5 about the power of writing and how to come up with ideas. He wanted students to know that they are capable of writing stories on their own as long as they continue to ask themselves questions about their story. Students enjoyed hearing Nick read aloud from his own book and give drawing tips on how to include emotion. The presentation was very interactive and engaging as students also created a story together as a whole group. After giving two presentations, Nick signed several books for the second grade students that participated in the Book Madness competition. Homestead will be forever grateful to Nick for inspiring students to be brave writers.
