The Thompson Tigers Robotics Team qualified for the FIRST Lego League State Championships on Saturday, December 17th.  They also won the esteemed Core Value Award, which is awarded to the team demonstrating inspiration, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®.

In preparation for competition, teams build and program a robot to perform specific missions.  They also must identify a real world problem, conduct research, and present a solution.  This year’s theme was Animal Allies, and the team focused on search dogs.  For part of their research, they visited with Deputy Flanders and Taz, a K9 team from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.  The team also got to participate in search and rescue training with Bill Bailey, Rebel, and the Wilmington ESDA and Kendall County Search and Rescue Teams.  They identified overheating as a major issue for the dogs and created a prototype for a cooling harness with small fans.

The Illinois State Championship will take place in January 2017.
