Mr. James Martin

Principal

I am honored to be a part of the Plank Junior High School and School District 308 learning community. In 1981 I earned my bachelor’s degree from North Central College, in Naperville, Ill., with a concentration in history and secondary education. I later attended Governor’s State University, Chicago, for my endorsement as a learning behavior specialist. I returned to Governor’s for my master’s degree in educational administration.

I have served in many roles during my career in education. I began as a teaching assistant, taught history, science and special education for 14 years and served as a high school dean of students for five years before moving into administration. Before my tenure here at Plank, I served as an assistant superintendent of Summit Hill School District 161 and as principal of Liberty Junior High School in Burbank School District 111. Before that, I held assistant principal positions at Central Middle School, Tinley Park, and Summit Junior High School, Frankfort.

My administrative team and instructional staff believe in putting student learning first; there can be no compromise. We are here to partner with our students and families to find a pathway to success for every individual, without exception. We are eager join with each and every parent and guardian within our learning community to provide world-class educational experiences for all Plank students.

Plank Jr. High is an outstanding school and I am so proud to join the Pirate team as an Assistant Principal.  This will be my 15th year in education and 13th year in School District 308.  I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Millikin University, Decatur, IL in 2002. I received a master’s degree in special education from Lewis University, Romeoville, IL, in 2005 and a second master’s degree in educational leadership through Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL, in 2012. I look forward to working closely with the students, parents, and staff of the Plank community.

Assistant Principal

I am thrilled to join the leadership team as assistant principal at Plank Junior High School. Prior to becoming a Pirate, I spent two years as a special education teacher in Tempe, Ariz. The last 15 years of my educational journey occurred in Indian Prairie School District 204. Nine of those years were spent as an inclusive special education teacher and the last six as an interventionist. I graduated from Arizona State University, Phoenix with a bachelor’s degree in education. After moving back to Illinois, I attended Aurora University, in Aurora, Ill., and completed my master’s in educational leadership. I am passionate about the underpinning of literacy in education. This led me to complete coursework and graduate with a master’s degree in reading instruction. My focus during the last six years has been on school improvement and response to intervention in both academics and behavioral instruction. I am honored to be in District 308, working with amazing students and dedicated parents and alongside a fabulous faculty.
